Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, Gujarat, India, was a pre-eminent leader of the Indian independence movement against British rule. He is often referred to as ‘Mahatma’ or ‘Great Soul’. Gandhi’s philosophy of nonviolent resistance, known as ‘Satyagraha’, played a crucial role in India’s struggle for independence.
